Business Rules

We began as a project team within the GUIDE organization in 1988. Our initial focus was on business rules that could be implemented directly in information technology ~ the kinds of rule that would be defined formally in specifications of the information system (that is, 'row 3' of the Zachman Framework).

Our first report was published as a GUIDE project publication in 1995 and then revised in 1997 and 2000. As the decade drew to a close our focus was broadening to include the business perspective (as well as the information system and technology perspectives). In 2002, we published the Business Rules Manifesto. This popular statement of the principles of 'rule independence' is available in English as well as translations to numerous other languages, with additional translations in process.
In 2000, we published our second major work, which deals with one important aspect of business rules from the business (Zachman 'row 2') perspective ~ the 'motivation' behind the business rules of an enterprise. The 2005 update this paper is entitled The Business Motivation Model ~ Business Governance in a Volatile World. Our work on the business perspective continues, as a response to an RFP from the Object Management Group (OMG), entitled Business Semantics of Business Rules (BSBR). In 2005, the BRT's final submission, Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR), was accepted by the OMG to move into the 'finalization' stage of the OMG standardization process.

Group Business

Welcome to the European Business group, which was formed some ten years ago, to be the focal point for European Business in India. The intention is to provide a common platform where European Business can come together to discuss matters of common interest and have them represented in a broader way.
The Council made up of representatives from the membership together with our Patron, the serving EC Ambassador, is proud to say that many successes have been achieved since the EBG was formed. The annual Position Paper that we produce has now been introduced as an official document in the Indo-EU Bilateral discussions and more recently, the EBG has been invited to play an active role in the Indo-EU Summit. In addition to this, the EBG is invited to present our views at an annual pre-budget meeting with the Finance Ministry, as well as having meetings with many other government departments, which is a direct reflection of the increasing trade between India and the EU.
Our Mumbai Chapter continues to grow from strength to strength and we are now planning to open a third chapter in the country. All of this has been made possible through the strength of our membership and the strong support they give us. I thank all the members for their continuing support of the EBG and helping us to play a role in representing European Business in the exciting development of this great country.
